The Writer’s Journey – Guest Author, Pamela Schloesser Canepa

Indie author finally realizes a life-long dream of sharing her writing habit with the world.
Pamela Schloesser Canepa, self-published author and Earth inhabitant.

pamela

How and when you started writing: I recall writing my first short story at age 8, when we traveled from Florida to Tennessee to visit my uncle and his family. I had to entertain myself in the car, and this came in quite handy! It was shared with family, and they all encouraged me profusely. I continued writing, for class, for myself, to exercise strong emotions, etc., but much of it was shown to no one. Still, it was good for me! I was a quiet little girl, and this helped me channel my voice.

How and when you first published: I entered poetry contests and got into vanity published books. If nothing else, it felt good. In my thirties, I published stories on my Myspace blog. (Don’t laugh)! I recently started blogging on WordPress this year, and shared some stories in contests on Wattpad, which started ideas for my novellas that have been published just this year (2016), in the sci-fi romance genre. My second two are science-fiction, but not strictly romance, however, and they carry a stronger theme.

Are you published Traditionally, Small Online Press, Indie Author, or combination?
I am an indie author. I think of the poems I got published in vanity press as a build up to where I am now.

Tell us about your journey to where you are today.
In a nutshell, I had to change from the little girl whose family gushed over her cute little stories, to the solemn, confused teen who wrote dark poetry and hid it. Then, I grew from the young woman who journaled her way into self-esteem after processing and leaving a bad marriage, to the woman who wrote poetry expressing her parental fears/frustration and shared them with the world, to who I am today, putting my thoughts into fiction in an attempt to get a message across while entertaining my reader at the same time. My writing journey has been a growth, not just as a writer, but as a person. I recently had a reader call one of my novellas “thought-provoking.” That was such an honor! Yet, I realize it is out there for criticism as well as praise, and I need to be ready for both. Some will love my work, and some will not. It comes with the territory.

What have you learned along the way?
I’ve learned that self-publishing also means self-promoting. That it is a lot of work. I’ve learned that some days I will get the writing or promoting fever and cannot stop until I’ve beaten that fever into the ground. I have also learned that having a friend who is in the same position as an indie writer is so invaluable. So I have joined Rave Reviews Book Club, through which I met the wonderful owner of this blog that is allowing me to spread news of my writing! I have also joined other writing forums online and made many helpful friends. I see that you can’t just take others’ support, you need to give it as well. That is what builds a community of indie writers who can learn from each other, and it really gets these books out there for the world to see.

What would you do differently? I would do more promoting, pre-publication. I would also likely expand the ideas in my first few novellas. However, when all three are read, they tend to make my intended point. I may add to them in the future. But for now, I am working on a full-length novel and I am going through the entire process of editing, re-writing, and editing again. It is not for the faint of heart.

Published e-books:

Made for Me is a sci-fi romance, the first in a series of sci-fi novellas. Be sure to also check out the sequel, Seeing Through Sampson’s Eyes! The third, and latest, in this series is From Bedlam to Ben! All are available at Amazon.

My Review

Ally and Jack are characters you will love to root for…

Seeker is a wonderful book with the kind of teenage characters you love to root for. Ally is a good person, and Jack is the bad boy with a bad boy past, that embarrasses him. Ally gives him the confidence he needs and Jack brings her out of her shell. Together, they are the perfect couple and good for each other.

Ally has supernatural abilities that came from the female side of her family, but hers are more intense than anything the family has experienced in centuries. Her grandmother is a quirky character, much younger at heart than her years, and her mother is the mother every teen wants to have. Each parental figure has their own unique gift as well.

Jack’s extended family rallies around him to help him cope with the bad things he’s done. He first changes his attitude for the sake of his little sister. He wants to be a better role model for her.

In this story Ally has visions of someone being harmed and goes to great lengths to find a way to help even though at first she doesn’t even like this person very much.

I loved this story. The writing and characterization is well-done and the story moved along at a nice pace. It’s a page-turner you’ll not want to put down until you’ve read the last word. There’s mystery, paranormal abilities, and a great romance brewing. What more could you want? I will read more from this author for sure.

#EggcerptExchange: HOUSE OF THE RISING SON by Trevann Rogers

Another #Eggcerpt for the Eggcerpt Exhange Authors Blog Tour! Today I’m featuring Trevann Rogers with the book HOUSE OF THE RISING SON.

ABOUT THE BOOK

HouseOfTheRisingSon72smSex. Rebellion. Rock and roll.

Living After Midnight, Book 1

Cheyenne is a half-human incubus whose star is on the rise in the Unakite City rock scene. His father, the leader of the supernatural races, would prefer he keep a “low profile”, but screw that. Cheyenne has as much music in his veins as royal incubi blood.

Alexander’s future is all set—finish law school, join the family firm, and marry someone who’d be good for business. Not that he has a say in any of it. He’s barely met the woman his father expects him to marry.

As Cheyenne’s musical career takes off, his carefully constructed life begins to unravel, exacerbated by an ex-lover who can’t let go, a crotchety barkeeper with a dirty mind and a pure heart, a drag queen who moonlights as a nanny, and Alexander—who’s not sure if he’s falling for the incubus or the rocker.

Cheyenne denies who he is, while Alexander hides what he wants. Together, they learn that getting what they truly want means being who they truly are.

Excerpt

The blue-gray glow of the synthesizer’s lights increased with the music’s crescendo and tugged him to the edge of his seat. The beginning of a show was one of his favorite parts. He was also partial to the middle and the end.

But Alexander didn’t applaud and stomp and scream in anticipation like the rest of the crowd. He was grateful to be able to keep his composure, but the truth was, it was all he could do to remember to breathe.

With a burst of light and a thunderous chord, Cheyenne appeared at center stage, arms out from his sides. An ethereal white light illuminated him. A rock and roll messiah.

Fallen Leaves by Tina Gayle

Blurb –

fallenleavesAs autumn comes to the Winston estate in Ohio, Amber Harrison learns further lessons in her new position as keeper for the spirits and ghosts who haunt the estate–and further lessons in love, too. She and her love, Carter Miller, grapple with the fears and passions of new love, while caught up in the storm of ancient family drama.

This is the second book in the unfolding saga of the psychics and talents associated with the Winston estate, a sheltered place where past, present, and future are woven into a single dramatic tapestry of love and desire. The tale spans multiple generations, multiple eras, and offers something special for all ages of reader. A sexy, erotic winner, with an assortment of couples to appeal to most tastes.

Excerpt:

“How long before you install the new cabinets?”

He turned on the ladder. His dark brown eyes captured her, engulfing her in an encompassing warmth. She melted under his heated gaze, which ran from the top of her head to the white socks on her feet. He lifted a brow at her attire, but he didn’t comment on her pink sweat suit.

“With the old cabinets out of the way, I need to knock down this wall and tear up the flooring. The electrical work is next on the agenda.” He climbed off the ladder, yanked off his gloves, and slid a hand through his thick, wavy hair.

“It might be awhile before we install the new cabinets. Right now, we’re simply working to remove the old stuff so we can start fresh.” He smiled, which didn’t hide the dark circles under his eyes or the fatigue in the slump of his shoulders.

“There’s no hurry. If you’re busy with something else, this can wait until your Dad and Mattie come home next week.”

“No, Dad doesn’t want her dealing with this mess.” Carter unbuckled his tool belt and placed it on a workbench. “I promised him I’d have it done.”

“Is Grant helping?” Amber stepped around several pieces of sheetrock and stray bits of wood, to the bottom of the stairs.

He walked to the backdoor. “Friday, his classes are over at noon.”

With his hand resting on the doorknob, he appeared anxious to leave. “I’m headed to lunch, and then I need to drop by the office for a while. Are you sure you’re okay here by yourself?”

Amber toyed with the idea of saying no. She missed the taste of his lips and the strength of his arms, but she nodded instead. “Yes, I’m fine.”

After opening the door, he paused. “I guess I’ll see you later.”

She waved and turned to head to her room, satisfied she’d at least gotten him to talk. Her leaden feet trudged up the steps. Unexcited, she contemplated her latest assignment from the family council. How could she achieve such an impossible task of convincing her great grandmother’s ghost to cross over?

The Writer’s Journey – Guest Author, Lori Soard

Today, I welcome a good friend. I’ve known her for about twenty years, when we first met at the Writer’s Club message boards on American Online. We’ve been in many clubs together, even started a few ourselves. Of course, she had the idea and would ask me if I’d like to help, and I’d say, “Sure.”

She is always breaking new ground in the publishing industry–example: the first RWA online chapter: From The Heart, another writer’s club: World Romance Writers, and the first author promotion site (to my knowledge): Word Museum. She is a wonderful person as well as author and entrepreneur. So, it is with great pleasure that I introduce to you, Lori Soard.

It All Started with a Giraffe Named Geraldine

My very first memories are of my dad telling me bedtime stories about a crazy giraffe named Geraldine. Geraldine was always getting into messes and had to be rescued. He would let me make choices in how the story would go. Does Geraldine go into the clearing or stay hidden? Does she follow the noise she heard or ignore it? These were the first stories I helped create and one of my favorite memories from my childhood.

I always loved books and stories. My parents bought me books as little gifts, played word games with me, and let my imagination have free reign. I truly believe that God gives us the parents he does for a reason and he couldn’t have chosen better with mine. I am thankful every day for their influence in my life and their love.

When my first grade teacher showed me how to string letters into words and words into sentences, I was thrilled. Now, I could read books for myself. And, I could write my own stories. I devoured every book I could get my hands on, started journaling and started writing stories. My early school years were all about finishing the busy work, because the teachers would let me read quietly if I finished early.

In high school, I would write stories and pass them to my friends between classes. They would add to them and we’d all swap stories again. I still have some of these silly stories, but they were so much fun. Some of them are about aliens taking over our friends’ bodies, but most are about romance. We had code names for our crushes in case anyone ever found one of our stories or a teacher tried to read it out loud.

It wasn’t until college when a journalism professor encouraged us to write an article and submit it to our local newspapers that I realized you could make money from your writing. The editor published my piece, put it on the front page, and gave me $25. At the time, I was more thrilled with that $25 than any amount I’ve ever been paid for my writing since. It was a light bulb moment for me and I knew I would always write from that point forward.

I’ve been published in multiple formats. Some of my first books were with ebook publishers, in the days when people said ebooks would never take off and they were basically a joke. I knew, even back then, that they were the wave of the future. I’ve always loved technology and I just felt in my gut that they would one day be a big deal. My very first book was titled Man of Means and was on a floppy disk. I recently republished that book, after extensive edits, for Kindle and in paperback.

Later, I was published by Thorndike for their Five Star line. I loved working with my editor, Russell, but they eventually moved away from contemporary romances and I felt a bit lost as I was another orphaned author. Eventually, I moved over to Amber Quill Press. In the last couple of years, I’ve moved to self-publishing. Just as I once thought that ebooks would be the wave of the future, I believe that being in control of my own books and how they are presented, packaged, and priced, is the next phase of my writing. I won’t say I’ll never again be with a traditional publisher. I enjoy the give and take of working with an editor and getting the intensive feedback that entails. I’m open to whatever direction the Lord wants to take my writing career.

One thing I’ve learned along the way is that you have to be open to writing different things. About 10 years ago, I began writing more non-fiction than I had. Although I’d always written a few articles here and there, I noticed the majority of my income was from articles and not from my fiction. The fiction income tends to come in spurts, but you never know just how big the spurt of income will be or when it will arrive. Writing non-fiction balances that for me. I also like to give my brain a break, as writing non-fiction requires different skills than writing fiction. I also edit for a couple of clients and do some web design. By varying tasks, I can stay busy most of the time and easily put in 40 hours a week or more. All the time, I’m loving every bit of it. I feel so blessed to do things I truly enjoy and make a living at it.

Marketing has changed a lot over the years. Today, you have to be active on social media, advertise, and stay in touch with your readers by blogging. However, I also believe you need to be vocal that you’re a writer and your books are available. I have a friend, and everywhere we go she is talking about her books to people. I’m trying to learn from her boldness, because I have a really hard time doing that for myself. I actually will hide out and never mention I’m a writer unless someone knows it already. I don’t know why, but this is definitely something I’m trying to overcome.

I have found it really hard to line up in-person book signings for this latest book. There used to be a lot of independent small booksellers out there. They’re all but gone. That makes it a bit more difficult to get out there and meet new readers. I’m going to be trying some festivals and different events instead in the coming year. I’m hoping that will allow me to get the word out more. I am also doing some online book tours and connecting with friends who are bloggers.

I actually wouldn’t change anything about my writing journey so far, even the mistakes. I believe that we learn from every mistake, every success, and every failure. These things all come together to make me who I am. I like who I am in Christ and the skills, knowledge and lessons along the way. I would do it all again.

I would encourage new writers to dig in their heels and never quit. Focus on why you are writing. It likely isn’t to get famous, because there are easier ways to achieve that. It is probably because you have something to say or a message to share. If you can share that with just a handful of people, then you’ve made a difference in someone’s life. Learn to focus on the reason and not the result and you’ll always be a success with your writing.

Lori’s Latest Book

cupidscrossingLori’s latest book is Cupid’s Quest, which is the first in her Cupid’s Crossing series. It is a contemporary inspirational romance available in paperback and ebook.

The only life Gracie has ever known has been the nursing home and the residents who are like family to her. Now, she risks losing it all and her friends scattering to different homes if she can’t come up with the money to save the business.

Between caring for his ailing mother and running the family farm, Brandt is stretched thin. Too thin. When his mother begs him to enter a local scavenger hunt, win the prize money, and convert the farm into an orchard, he knows he can’t refuse her anything, so he reluctantly agrees.

While seeking clues to the scavenger hunt, Gracie and Brandt keep bumping into each other. Gracie’s always had a crush on him that keeps her from stringing two coherent words together. Brandt doesn’t understand why she dislikes him so much she won’t even talk to him. If the nursing home residents would settle down and stop getting into crazy shenanigans long enough, the two might figure out that they have more than a little in common.

Excerpt: (from chapter two Shocking Finds)

Marin needed answers. Like why had they been targeted? The parking lot hadn’t exactly been lacking for vehicular violence victim contenders. There had been a group of at least four women, standing by their cars, chatting. If there was a target more deserving of vehicular rage, it had definitely been that group of women. They had finished shopping, and courtesy demanded that their parking spots were to be relinquished as soon as possible. Why not them?

The man—and Marin was only guessing that the driver was a man—had bypassed those without parking lot etiquette and zeroed in on Lindal. If she had continued her slow progress through the parking lot, would Marin be in this horrible room with its beeping monitors and bleached air instead of Lindal.

Staring down at her aunt’s unmoving form, Marin tried to find a place to rest her hand. She needed to touch her. She needed to know that the only person willing to take her in, after the death of her mother, was really here and still alive.

“They will find him, Lindal. He won’t get away with this,” Marin made her vow as quietly as possible, not wanting to disturb Lindal’s recovery.

Glancing up to keep tears from falling from her eyes, Marin noticed something swinging off of Lindal’s oxygen line.

“What the…” It looked like a Barbie doll with wings, perhaps six inches tall. The odd little creature wore a loin cloth and sported some overly obvious male attributes. Was it wrong to be checking out the abs of someone no larger than a child’s toy?

His arms tugged and his muscles bunched as he attempted to make a knot in Lindal’s oxygen line. His silver skin tone went beautifully with his tri-colored wings— a mix of light purple, maroon, and gold. The little man didn’t seem to realize that Marin was staring at him.

“Stop,” Marin shouted. Dammit, this was a hospital. She needed to lower her voice. She also needed to go upstairs to the psych ward. Head trauma, shock, or hallucinations…something wasn’t right. If she told Lindal about this, her aunt would call her every kind of fool.

Hallucination or not, she grabbed the little man by the wings, pulled him from Lindal’s oxygen line, and tried to speak more calmly. “What do you think you’re doing?”

She finally had her figment’s attention. A striking, though small, pair of lavender eyes glared at her through overly long sandy brown bangs. On closer inspection, she could see that his hair was actually multicolored. It seemed to go from crystal white sand to bronzed gold.

“Well, answer me. What do you think you’re doing?”

“Waiting for you, of course.”

“What are you?” She was losing it. The buzzing in her temples was increasing. And she was now speaking to a figment of her imagination. Yep, she needed to be medicated.

The creature put its tiny fists on narrow hips. “A Sprite, of course. Don’t you know anything? I have my work cut out for me.” Now she was being insulted by her imagination. Great.

“Nope. Too Much,” Marin said and tossed the little man with wings out of the hospital window. She needed coffee. Either that or a large dose of Thorazine. Maybe both.

All About Tracey Clark!!

101_0329I am a country-twang gal from the bluegrass state. Kentucky is a hot bed of horses, cave systems, and whiskey. And I love all three. With my pugs and bossy kitty cat, I spend my days writing and working social media. I write with the help of the voices pushing me to create worlds for them to live in. Fantasy Romance, Contemporary Romance, and eventually some cowboys (because cowboys live in a group all their own, yummmm)… These are the genres that I love best. Oil paints, crafts, dealing with Multiple Sclerosis, and writing into the dead of night… this I my life!!!

Interviewer (light chuckle): Great. Well, I nice to finally get to sit down with us… and as the new Princess to the Fae people, with such an odd upbringing… the Fae would love to know a little pit about you… Tell us a little bit about day to day life in the royal world…

Marin: Pfft… Most of the time I think they have the wrong girl… I mean… I was home schooled, and have worked at Finder’s Keepers since I turned 17… for the past four years I have been slipping into Finder’s Trances in order to locate everything from pets to abduction victims… from car keys to family heirlooms… it sounds like important work but really, I mostly had to pull a bunch of information together so that other Finder’s could go out on Mission to locate whatever the client had misplaced…

Interviewer: That sounds like important work to me… also, something that would take a toll on your emotions… do you have someone to cuddle up to at night to help you get through the day???

Marin (Cheeks now flaming red): Kyland… he came out of nowhere and changed my life… and he doesn’t even mind when I accidentally shock him with this new power that has a tendency to get out of control when I’m upset…

Interview: …. (shuffles through questions) … (scoots chair back and grits her teeth)… What goals and hardships do you face… what do you want for the Fae?? I mean… what are your plans to keep the Fae community safe?? (scoots back a little further…)

Marin (head cocked to the side): I’m still learning about the Fae world.. but I would say my goal is to keep as many people safe as I can… (fists clench) … if the evil Fae, those Danshue ********… sorry for my language, but if they would just stop getting in the way, I could learn a little faster… someone needs to stop the Danshue before this community I’m just getting to know dies out…

Sparks light up on Marin’s hands, but Interviewer merely gets a white
Knuckled grip on her set and continues…

Interviewer: One final questions and we will let you get back to your new duties as Princess… Can you tell us what fears you are facing in this new chapter of your life???

Marin: … (Deep Breath…) Lindal… that the woman that pretended to be my only family, that kidnapped me as a child (sparks on her fingertips) … that she will find a way to finish what she started… (more sparks) … that she will find a way to hurt the people I am coming to care about… that she will hurt KYLAND … (small explosion blowing out all the lights)

Interview warily pulls herself up out of the floor, where she dove to avoid flying glass…

Interview(voice shaky) : Alright… I think that’s all we have time for… thanks for stopping by Princess…

Teaser Scene

HH-KindleCoverLucy had made herself invisible even to Lana before leaving the security of the house. It wouldn’t do for anyone else with an open mind to see her hovering beside her.

A tall, good-looking man walking ahead of Lana yelled, “Ow!” and jumped a few inches off the ground before turning around and giving her a one-eyed stare. He rubbed his rear and then turned back around, walking much faster away from them.

“Lucy,” she whispered, “what did you do?”

“Just a little pinch, my girl. They didn’t make men like that in my day.”

“You’re unbelievable! If you’re not good, I’ll take you back home and you can wait there until I return.”

Lucy laughed. “Did you see the tight muscles in his arms, the dark as night hair and the rear on that man? Ooh la la! Can’t believe you’re still single with men like that in the world. When’s the last time you had a date anyway?”

“I do okay. Besides, I’m in no hurry to settle down.” A cool breeze blew in from the ocean and she breathed deeply.

“Whatcha waiting for? Remember, the Grim Reaper could come a-calling at any time and that’s one fella you don’t want interested in you.”

Christmas Cruise CoverExcerpt
Chapter One
As Lana shielded her eyes from the sun with the back of her hand, she gazed up to the eight floors of the Princess Angeline Cruise Ship. The black, aqua, and gold colors of the Bahamian flag shifted in the sea’s breeze atop the massive ship. She’d learned from the brochure that the black represented the force and vigor of the united people of the Bahamas. The triangle pointing toward the body of the flag symbolized their determination and enterprise. The aqua and gold represented the rich resources of the sea and sun, in that order.

This would be Princess Angeline’s maiden voyage out of Charleston. Queen of the Atlantic Cruise Line originally operated out of California but had recently setup operations on the east coast.

She caught Tony studying her and she smiled to let him know she felt fine. She’d feared the large ship and had had to psych herself up for the cruise. Tony had taken her fishing last summer to familiarize her with the to-and-fro of the waves. When she told him that although she’d lived in Charleston all her life, she’d never been out on the ocean in a boat, he’d thought she was joking. It became evident the first time they ventured out that she wasn’t kidding at all.

Lana couldn’t believe she’d finally agreed to take a seven-day voyage across the Atlantic to the Bahama Islands. Nervous excitement supplied her with a giddiness like she’d never experienced.

Before leaving home, she’d made sure to pack Dramamine just in case she became sea sick. She’d heard many stories about trips being ruined just because someone hadn’t realized they’d be affected. Tony laughed at her, but of course, he’d been on cruises from the time he could walk.

As she neared the ship, her legs became heavier, hindering her movement. Dread filled her heart and she wondered if it was an omen that the trip would be plagued with sickness or could it possibly be a doomed ship that would sink into the vast ocean. “Something’s wrong,” she said, exhaling.

Tony placed a hand around her arm to lead her onto the ship. His blue eyes pleaded with her. “Come on. There’s nothing to be afraid of.”

He pulled harder but Lana planted her feet firmly, refusing to move. “I’m not afraid. It’s a feeling, an omen, that something’s wrong. Definitely wrong.” But as suddenly as the dark cloud had descended upon her, it was gone—a heavy burden lifted from her shoulders. Perhaps the foreboding was her fear of the large vessel, of being in the middle of the sea without any land in sight. She took in a deep breath to steady her nerves, determined she wouldn’t go there.

Tony frowned with apparent concern. “You okay? Should I cancel the trip?”

She forced a smile. “No. I’m fine now. Besides, it’s too late to get your money back. I can do this.”

“I don’t care about the money. I just want you to feel safe. I’ve done this many times, although, it’s been a while and I can assure you it’ll be okay.” He wrapped an arm around her and pulled her to him, and she laid her head onto his shoulder.
She snuggled deeply into the curve of his neck and placed a light kiss on his jawbone. “I trust you. I don’t know what happened. A deep-seeded dread came over me and all of a sudden I couldn’t move.”

“Where did it come from?” he asked, cradling her head to his chest as she turned in his arms.

“I don’t know. But as suddenly as my imagination went wild, it stopped. At first, I thought it was a sign that we shouldn’t go, and now I feel an urgency to board, like something is beckoning to me, like someone needs my help.”

“Will there ever be a trip where someone doesn’t need your help?” he asked with irritation but continued to strum her long brown hair.

“Please, Tony, don’t be like that. We’ve been married over a year. By now you should understand that I have no choice. It’s a calling and if there was anyone else to do it, I would step aside and let them have at it.”

His frown turned to a smile. “I’m sorry. I know. It’s just . . . I don’t know. I guess I’m just hardheaded sometimes. I’d hoped this would be one trip taken without any ghost drama. I should’ve known better.”

“You’re normally so understanding about my ghost drama,” she said, mimicking him. “What’s with you today?”

He shook his head as if trying to clear it from an unwanted thought. “I sense something sinister myself. I’ve never felt this before now. Could your gift be rubbing off on me?” True concern spread across his face.

“It doesn’t work that way, but it’s possible for a spiritual presence to change another person’s mood just by the person being in close proximity to the spirit’s negativity.” She rubbed his upper arm, causing heat to radiate through her fingertips. “Having a spiritual lightening rod, so to speak, meaning me, standing beside you could land you in the crossfire of electrical charges bouncing across the realm.”

“Let’s do this if we’re going to.” He picked up their luggage and placed it on the cart where it could be loaded onto the ship and then taken to their room.

Lana wrapped her arm around his and walked to the gangway that would lead them to the main deck. Dread started to come over her again but she whispered, “Not now,” and she pushed it away with her mind. She smiled. “Let’s go up top and pretend we have loved ones below seeing us off.”

Their friends wanted to come to see them off, but she’d told them not to. She hadn’t wanted to disrupt their lives since, due to recent Homeland Security concerns, it could take a long while to get through security to board.

His smile spread wider as he took her hand and traipsed along beside her. They climbed a narrow staircase. Once on top, they waved to the crowd below, letting themselves go. They laughed at their pretense.

Lana yelled over the side to the people, “Bye! See you in a few days.”

Tony followed suit. “We’ll miss you!” he said, chuckling loudly.

“Feels good to just let go and relax a bit, doesn’t it?”

“It does. I don’t know how I lucked up and found Gina to take care of business so I could take this time off. She’s a godsend.”

“Should I be jealous?” Lana cocked her head to the side.

He gave her that look that said she was being silly. “Gina’s almost young enough to be my daughter.”

His words weren’t meant to harm her, but they did just the same. She felt her eyes well up but pushed her emotions aside. They’d been trying to get her pregnant for a few months now with no luck, and she hoped this trip would relax her enough to make it happen.
