Book Review: “Myth and Magic” by Mae Clair

ABOUT THE AUTHORmae

Mae Clair opened a Pandora’s Box of characters when she was a child and never looked back. Her father, an artist who tinkered with writing, encouraged her to create make-believe worlds by spinning tales of far-off places on summer nights beneath the stars.

Mae loves creating character-driven fiction in settings that vary from contemporary to mythical. Wherever her pen takes her, she flavors her stories with conflict, mystery and a dash of romance. Married to her high school sweetheart, she lives in Pennsylvania and is passionate about folklore, old photographs, a good Maine lobster tail and cats.

ABOUT THE BOOK

mmAS CHILDREN THEY PLAYED GAMES OF MYTH AND MAGIC…

Veronica Kent fell in love with Caith Breckwood when they were children. As a teenager, she was certain he was the man she was destined to marry. But a traumatic event from Caith’s past led him to fear a future together. He left Veronica, hoping to save her from a terrible fate. Twelve years later, Caith, now a P.I., is hired to investigate bizarre incidents at the secluded retreat Veronica manages. Returning to his hometown, Caith is forced to face his nightmares—and his feelings for the woman he’s always loved.

THEN ONE DAY THE MONSTERS BECAME REAL.

After the callous way Caith broke her heart, Veronica isn’t thrilled to see him again. But strange occurrences have taken a dangerous toll on business at Stone Willow Lodge. Forced to work together, Veronica discovers it isn’t ghostly apparitions that frighten her, but her passion for a man she has never forgotten. Or forgiven. Can two people with a tarnished past unearth a magical future?

MY REVIEW

Engaging and Intriguing

I loved Myth and Magic. It engaged me from the beginning and kept me guessing until the end. A thoroughly enjoyable story with a steamy romance and a captivating mystery.

When mysterious and disturbing episodes plague Stone Willow Lodge, Caith is hired to determine the source in his old hometown where he has been estranged for years from his family. Ghosts from his past haunt him as he tries to figure out who is behind all of Stone Willow’s problems, including how he’d left his relationship with Veroinica.

The book continues at a good pace and keeps you guessing. The characters are well-drawn and likable. I highly recommend Myth and Magic to all who love to read about romantic and intriguing tale.

Babe Driven

Harriet’s crazily successful business idea is under serious threat, and the danger seems to be coming from inside her own family. She whisks her sister and her friends away to an exotic location to try and work out whose side they are on. It’s time to start damage limitation.

When the girls arrive at the glorious villa owned by Harriet’s maverick business partner Nikki, they find a gorgeous band and their sexy lead singer Max staying next door, out to entice their new neighbours into all kinds of trouble.

This isn’t a holiday for Harriet and she can’t afford to be distracted. She has to sell her business idea to the powerful resort owner, the elusive Mr Grant, while she is there, or she may not have a business to go back to. Harriet will have to choose between family and friends, business or pleasure. For someone who stays out of the limelight, even though her new company is the hottest ticket in town, she’s going to have to avoid the front pages of every newspaper if she wants to survive the ride!

My Review

Strong and Fun Characters

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Babe Driven with a strong and fun cast of characters. Each one presented with their own set of problems to overcome. It may be their misconceptions of those around them, either friend or foe, to the realization of those who love them for who they are. You follow the strong personalities on their journey of enlightenment of those they love, even when they’re deeply flawed. They all grow in some way. Some may come to see others as they truly are and some may see themselves as others see them, whether good or bad. But they all grow and learn along the way.

I recommend this book to readers who love well-defined characters, mystery, romance, and humor.

papalaSkiesAbout The Book

Chicago native Rochelle DuFortier likes to imagine the future, her world a series of picture postcards so vivid they sometimes seem real. When a foolish mistake at thirteen causes her mother’s death, she’s sent to a secluded Hawaiian valley, an outsider “haole-girl” among pidgin-speaking boys who hurl flaming papala spears under the full moon to summon her mother’s spirit. After boarding school and a prestigious university back east, the ambitious young woman is torn between chasing new career opportunities, discovering her mother’s heritage in a remote French village, and meeting obligations pulling her back to Hawaii.

On this island steeped in ancient mythology and modern superstition, Rochelle tests the possibility of sharing pieces of her life with those whose beliefs she barely understands and never intends to embrace. She dives the depths of a pristine coral lagoon, conceals bodies in a subterranean lava tube, and challenges the eruptions of a living volcano, even as she deciphers the truth about her mother’s death and struggles to satisfy new debts born of old betrayals.

Papala Skies is the story of a young woman who makes all the right choices, only to find herself living an unexpected life. It is about the need to belong, and seeking one’s own version of truth amid such differing cultures’ responses to wrenching loss and abiding grief. It is about yearning for a sense of place, yet having to confront new ways to honor the love of family and friends.

Will Rochelle lose what matters most, or might she learn what the smart octopus already knows?

My Review

Intriguing and Character Driven

The vivid descriptions of imagery virtually transport you to the Hawaii island, and carry you to the city of Chicago, an ivy league university, and to France.

A complex story with tragic situations and reactions. The main character, Rochelle, is faced with the challenges of getting on with her own life or helping others with their challenges. Her life does not turn out as she always thought it would.

There’s an underlying suspense surrounding how Rochelle’s mother died, and Rochelle’s guilt over her mother’s death is felt throughout most of the story. But that’s not all. There are primary forces driving chaos in her life and those she’s come to love. There’s the complexity of plots and sub-plots as Rochelle is drawn from one tragedy to another.

The characters are so well-drawn that you feel you are right there with them, wanting to help but unable to prevent the next heartbreak life throws their way. You will cry, laugh, and revel in their victories over life’s unrelenting obstacles.

I highly recommend this character-driven tale with strong relationships, as well as intrigue, action, and yes, some romance too.

Thanks for having me on your blog. I’ve actually got a lot going on right now. First, let me start by introducing my latest project, the Torn Series.

Torn Away is the first book of the series and I’m trying something new with it. It’s featured from 4-3-16 to 5-3-16 on Kindle Scout.

Kindle Scout is an affiliate of Amazon. An author can submit their books to the Scout program and they review it for publication. You get a 30 day campaign where your book is on the Kindle Scout page. People can go, read a sample and nominate your book for publication. While the decision to publish or not to publish a work isn’t based solely on the number of nominations, proving that the book can garner interest can only help.

Torn Away has been doing pretty well, staying and even toping their hot and trending book.

Here’s the blurb and link.

Torn Away (Torn Book 1)
by VINCENT MORRONE

He’s faced with a surviving sister who refuses to forgive him for leaving, a nephew who trembles when he enters the room and an entire town who thinks he got away with murder.

visionssquareI’m also thrilled to announce that I’ve recently released my debut novel, Vision of Shadows as an Audio book. Narrated by wonderful and talented Amy Hilburm, it’s amazing to hear her bring life to Bristol Blackburn.

Bristol is a 17 year psychic who is literally about to meet the boy of her dreams. He’ll either be the love of her life, or the end of it.

Here’s a link to Audible where people can hear a snippet.

Vision of Shadows is book 1 of the Vision series. So far, I’ve released 2 full length novels, Vision of Shadows and the sequel Vision of Serpents. There’s also a short story called Vision of Secrets. Vision of Sacraments is book 3 of the 5 book series and it’s due to be released by May of this year.

In addition to that, there’s my bestselling book, Just Breathe, a New Adult romance.

(TRIGGER WARNING: This content deals with an account of sexual assault and may be triggering to some people.)

justbreatheFINAL

When Cassie Shaw looks at Noah Hunt, she sees a knight in shining armor, but she’s convinced he sees her as nothing but damaged goods.

Noah saved her from a brutal assault, talked her through a panic attack, and held her when she broke down crying.

Noah is a mystery. He avoids talking about his past, his phone rings with calls from four women he won’t talk about, and he receives texts from over a dozen more. To add to the intrigue, when Cassie
Cassie finally finds a chink in Noah’s armor, and realizes that he’s even more damaged than she is.

He saved her.

Now it’s her turn to save him.

Last but not least, I’ve got a novella coming out 9-28th called The Red Strokes. It’s part of a group anthology where different authors are contributing stories about supernatural creatures who at some point end up interacting with a Hotel that services of all sorts of creatures.

Book Review: “The Gemstone Chronicles Book One: The Carnelian ” by William Stuart

About The Author

William L Stuart was born in New Mexico, but has lived Georgia for many years. He speaks with a southern accent, drinks gallons of sweet tea, and loves the UGA Bulldogs. He almost attended that great university, but decided instead to join the US Navy, where he subjected himself to the rigors of Navy Nuclear Power training in Orlando, Florida, and Idaho Falls, Idaho. Graduating from Nuke school landed him aboard USS Sandlance (SSN660), a Sturgeon class fast attack submarine. He was a fully qualified submariner, and traveled above the Arctic Circle to earn his Bluenose certificate.

After 3 and a half years aboard Sandlance, he transferred to recruiting duty in Americus, GA. While in Americus, William completed his undergraduate degree in Human Resources Management. William left the Navy soon after that, and began working in the civilian world. He has been an electrician for a carpet manufacturer, worked for the world’s largest candy cane manufacturer, and then worked in pharmaceutical manufacturing. He have since transitioned to the animal health world, where he manages global supply of animal health products.

William have been married to the wonderful, adorable, and lovely Lana for over 25 years. It was Lana and her blog (shameless plug time: http://www.lanascooking.com) that inspired William to publish his books. He is father to his amazing daughter Laura, and grandfather to Aidan and Maggie. All of them inspired a character in The Gemstone Chronicles.

Along with writing, William also enjoys gem hunting, gold prospecting, playing softball, playing golf (although I don’t play particularly well), and dabbling in woodworking. He tends to read a lot, and has a wide range of interests – including quantum physics, science in general, submarines, and conspiracy theories.

Connect with William on his site at http:/www.williamlstuart.com or on Twitter at http:/www.twitter.com/williamlstuart.

About The Book

Blurb:

When Aidan and Maggie find a fairy cross while rock-hunting with their grandfather, it’s just an oddity. But when they discover there is an elf imprisoned in the stone and set him free, they and their grandparents, Nana and Beebop, are attacked by Dark Elves and forced to flee to the magical world of Celahir.

In Celahir, Findecano – the elf the children freed from the fairy cross – leads them on a quest to recover gemstones stolen from the Elven Bow by the Dark Elves. Without the restoration of the gemstones to the Elven Bow, the balance between good and evil in Celahir – and the human world – could tip toward evil.

My Review:

A Magical Adventure

This was an enjoyable Narnia-like adventure story about an ordinary family, featuring Beebop, Nana, and their two grandchildren, Aidan and Maggie. The four run into all kinds of danger once they free an elf, Findecano, who was imprisoned by the dark elves.

I haven’t read too many fantasy type novels and wasn’t sure if this would be a story I would get through. I not only got through it, I enjoyed every moment as time after time, light triumphs over darkness.

I look forward to reading the next books in the series.

I missed a few days myself due to a work conference I had to attend three days this week. But if you missed it, you can still check out the posts at A Word With Traci blog. Just click on the Authors Already Featured where Traci has graciously offered links to the posts. I actually lost count of all the prizes and books I won, but plan to list everything here now as I go back and check through the blog.

And my winnings were:
I won a $15 Amazon Gift Card from Jennifer Hinsman, a 1 year subscription on Jacquie Lawson e-cards from Harmony Kent, 3 autographed print books (I’VE LOVED THESE DAYS by Bethany Turner, RIDDLE by Elizabeth Horton-Newton, & DANCE OF THE LIGHTS by Stephen Geez), and 9 e-books (Amazing Matilda by Bette Stevens, Una Familia & Learning to Fly in the Breaking Free series by Annie Hughes, UNBIND by Sarah Michelle Lynch, EMBER SKIES by Nicky Crawford. JUST TRY by Lisa S. Wow! Did I rack up or what? Some of these wonderful authors gave everyone who commented an e-book. So many gracious and generous authors were guests on this tour. Did I say it was fantabulous? No? Well that’s exactly what it was. I was thinking the other day that we should do something like this in December. We’ll see.

Review: “The Ruins on Stone Hill” by F. P. Spirit

About the Author

F.P. Spirit has always loved fantasy. From the moment he received his very first copy of fpSpiritLord of the Rings back in high school, he was hooked. Today, somewhere between work, raising two teen boys, and trying to be a devoted husband, F. P. manages to write sword and sorcery fantasy fiction.

His novels, The Ruins on Stone Hill, The Serpent Cult and The Dark Monolith, are the first three books in the series Heroes of Ravenford. The series chronicles the adventures of a band of young heroes in the dangerous world of Thac. F.P. is currently working on the fourth book in the Heroes of Ravenford series, The Princess of Lanfor, to be released in late 2015.

To learn more you can go to his website http://fpspirit.com/ or follow him on Twitter at https://twitter.com/FP_Spiritout

TheRuinsOnStoneHillAbout The Book

Magic is Easy or so Glolindir thought, until he came face to face with his first live monster. Casting spells was not so simple with death breathing down his neck. His story might have ended there if not for three gifted youths: Seth, the mysterious halfling with the moves of an assassin; Lloyd, the spiritblade whose fiery swords are whirlwind-fast; and Aksel, the gnome whose very touch can heal.

Yet that was just the beginning of their adventures, for dark shadows loom over the little town of Ravenford. The townsfolk quickly turn to these newcomers, who may indeed be their only hope. From the old ruined keep southwest of town to hidden caves in the western hills, through dark tunnels, secret passages, concealed rooms and magical mirrors, they must face mythical monsters, evil creatures, and dark wizards, each more perilous than the last. Can they rise to the challenge and become the Heroes that the people of Ravenford so sorely need?

My Review

Entertaining and Captivating

A band of misfits come together to become the Heroes of Stone Hill (as some call them). They go upon quest after quest for the Baron, after kicking some Orc booty and find a document for the town wizard. This little band consists of an elfin mage, a Halfling ninja, a gnome healer and a large human warrior. After their first encounter with the Orcs, they team with a couple of guys for hire (a tracker and a warrior) and even later an elfin bard.

I haven’t read a lot of Fantasy but this was an enjoyable read, and I intend to read more of Mr. Spirit’s books. THE RUINS ON STONE HILL was not only captivating; it was fun and hard to put down.

About The Book

I killed someone, you see. I killed the girl, who used to be me.

I’m Kate … Kate Charlesworth. I’m seventeen, and self-harming. This time I cut too deep, and I’m in hospital. I hadn’t meant for it to be so bad—it just sort of happened. I needed a lot of distraction that day.

You’ve had bad days, right? Days it hurts too much to think. Days you just wanna stay in bed. Days when the world needs to go away for a while. Right?

What do you do when you’ve hit rock bottom? When there’s nowhere left to turn?

This one little mistake lands me back on a psych unit—the last place I wanna be. Only this time, the nurse I end up with isn’t content to stick on a band-aid and send me home. She wants me to face my demons. But to do that, I’ll have to face who I am … who I used to be … I’ll have to find Katie.

My Review

Excellent Writing of Sensitive Subjects

Finding Katie is an excellent, well-written book. Written in first person, you experience the feelings, thoughts, heartache, etc. of a disturbed young woman of seventeen who struggles to find the girl she used to be. Ms. Kent handled the sensitive topics of abuse and self-harming like an expert.

I had a hard time putting it down once I started reading, but since I had to go back to work, I had no choice. However, I may have been late a few times as I dragged myself away kicking and screaming. Great job, Harmony Kent.
